Angular Momentum ( l) The shape of the orbital. The Pauli exclusion principle (Wolfgang Pauli, Nobel Prize 1945) states thatno two electrons in the same atom can have identical values for all four of their quantum numbers. There are three different quantum numbers: Principal ( n) The size of the orbital. An electron can spin in only one of two directions (sometimes called up and down). Besides this small number of exceptions, one big the most important thing, regarding the relationship between Quantum Mechanics and Periodic Table's shape is excluded, and ignored from the scientific community for nearly 100 years, or from the of the quantum mechanics birth. Specifies the orientation of the spin axis of an electron. It looks like that all questions concerning Periodic Table are solved, with the exception of some, so told, unimportant or no so relevant things. Also with the quantum mechanics’ postulates and principles, the physical and chemical properties of the elements, which vary periodically by their atomic structure, with their place in the Periodic Table were related. In the year (2016), in addition, the rest of the all known 118 elements with their names and symbols were defined. Moreover, there are 150 years from the Mendeleev’s formulation of the Periodic System, Periodic Table or Law. Therefore 32 elements would be present in the 6 th period of the periodic table. As is well known the year 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic System Table was declared. So, 32 electrons can be accommodated at a maximum level in 16 orbitals. According to Pauli’s exclusion principle, only 2 electrons can be accommodated in each orbital. As a result, the total number of orbitals present is 16. So, the 6s subshell consists of 1 orbital, 4f subshell consists of 7 orbitals, 5d subshell has 5 orbitals and 6p subshell has three orbitals. In the 6 th period, electrons can be filled in only 6s, 4f, 5d, and 6 p subshells. Thus, the 6d shell has a greater energy as compared to the 7s subshell. According to Aufbau’s principle, electrons are added to different orbitals in order of their increasing energies. For n = 6, azimuthal quantum number can have values of 0, 1,2,3,4. The value of principal quantum number for the sixth period is 6. For n 2, there are 4 different sets of quantum numbers (l, m) and 4 different wave functions. Each period starts with the filling of principal quantum number. The values of the conserved quantities of a quantum system are given by quantum numbers. ![]() ![]() In the periodic table, a period indicates the value of the principal quantum number denotes the total number of shells present in the atom of the element. There are four quantum numbers, namely, principal, azimuthal, magnetic and spin quantum numbers. It also gives the average distance of the electron from the nucleus and also specifies the energy value of the electron.Īzimuthal quantum number is the figure which determines the sub shell in a principal shell to which an electron belongs and it also signifies the number of subshell present in the principal shell. The principal quantum number is a number which determines the main energy level or principal shell to which the electron of the atom belongs. ![]()
